Construction In Progress: Custom Bar

Hello friends!  Who wants a drink??  Well, we're ready to serve you one!  In addition to our custom shelving project, we also did a small project up on our 4th floor.  We figured since we were making a mess (and the contractor had all his fancy tools set up in our garage) we would build out this project too.

We had this little nook that was perfect for customizing right next to the doors that lead to our roof deck.  Since we entertain on this floor quite a bit, we found ourselves wanting a place to keep some dishes, glasses and cold beverages.  We thought about installing a sink, but we just didn't think we'd use it enough to justify the cost.  So in about 40" of space, we managed to squeeze in space for a ton of essential entertaining stuff.  We just love the way it turned out.  Here are the construction details:

Construction Day 1:  After looking at refrigerators for a while, we finally decided on a GE beverage center.  We wanted something a bit more upscale from the college-esq mini fridge and we love all our other GE appliances so this seemed like a good fit.  Next to the fridge we had a perfect 18" wide hole left over, which meant we could use a standard 18" stock base cabinet.  We found ours at Lowes for a little over $100.  So our contractor placed these 2 units on the bottom, roughed in the counter top and ran electric to the back wall for the refrigerator hook up.

Construction Day 2:  The contractor installed a small filler panel over the refrigerator, put base on the cabinet and painted the counter top.

Construction Complete!  The only thing we have left to do is purchase and install the pulls.  We can't wait for our next party!

Cheers!

Mood Board: Flexible, Urban, Chic

I looove making mood boards!  They’re so fun and I think they can really capture the essence of a space.  They look great too, almost like a piece of art.  I recently made one for my neighbor Andrew, after I did a walk thru of his house.  He’s got a three level townhome with a few empty patches to fill.  Despite what he may think, he’s actually got a great design eye and he’s got all the bones in place.  He just needed a few ideas on how to complete and finish off some of his rooms.  So, without further ado, I introduce ‘Flexible, Urban, Chic’.

Breakfast table, we love it!

Sorry its taken me so long to post photos of our new breakfast table & chairs.  I've only been slightly distracted by all the dust in our house this week from all the construction.  But, the place was cleaned yesterday and we can finally breathe again.

But enough about that, this morning I thought I'd write about our new breakfast nook, which I'm happily sitting in right now as I type.  I've been wanting to get a table and chairs for our kitchen for a while now, but we had a hard time finding the right size/shape/color.  We have a tiny little space for a table, but now that we've got the table I don't know how we lived without it.  I love having a little spot to sit at on the weekends while drinking my coffee.  (I don't drink coffee, but if i did it would be here).  Anyway, here are a few pics of our new additions:

The chairs are from Room & Board and the table is from Crate and Barrel.  We shopped around for the chairs.  There are a ton of stores that carry bent plywood chairs so there were a lot to choose from.  We went with Room & Board because they were the cheapest and they offered free shipping!

This addition to our house has been a great one.  I'm watching the neighbors dog play outside in the snow right now, while my husband makes pancakes (Or at least, I'm about to ask him if he will).  Have a good weekend everyone!

Client Update: Paint Colors

Recently I took some photos of my neighbors (and now great friends!) brand new house.  They came to me looking for a bit of guidance selecting paint colors.  They were having a hard time making selections on there own and wanted a 3rd opinion.  (Which i totally understand, because I'm still trying to pick colors for my own house).  So, we sat down one afternoon, cracked open a beer and got to business.  They have a 4 story townhouse with 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, 2 living spaces, dining & kitchen.  Thats a lot of rooms!  So 2 beers later, we selected colors for there whole house.  And I'm happy to report, there was only 1 color they didn't like (sorry bout that purple bedroom Kevin!).  Hope you enjoy the photos below:

Construction In Progress: Built in Shelving

I have super exciting progress photos to share with you!  Remember back when I first started up this blog?  Way back in October...seems so long ago now that I'm such an advanced blogger (haa!).  Well, one of my first posts was some sketches showing ideas for built in shelving around our fireplace.  We've been wanting to do this project since we moved in - and now its finally happening!  Yay!  So over the past few months my husband and I have been meeting with our contractor (Todd @ Charm City Home Improvement) to develop the plans and fine tune the detailing.  And this week construction began.  So far its a dusty mess around here, but it's lookin pretty good.  We're super happy with the way its turning out.  Let me show you:

Here are the before photos:

Day 1:  They built the base cabinets and put up the framing for the shelving.  They also ripped off all the base molding and nosing on the mantel.

Day 2:  They got the shelving framed out and started laminating it.  They pulled cabling through the drywall for our TV and stereo wires, they installed the crown molding on the tops of the shelves and put a new thicker face on the mantel.

That sums up the progress so far.  We've got a few more days to go and then it should be all done and pretty.  I can't wait!

We're also building a little bar in our upstairs family room.  Progress photos on that soon!
